HERBERT: Moving Like A Train

New video from Matthew Herbert's latest album, Scale. This track features the vocals of Dani Siciliano. I was fortunate enough to catch Herbert play a free concert the other evening at Toronto's Harbourfront Amphitheatre. Herbert and crew dressed in pajamas and smoking jackets and jammed the night away. Great fun, cool sound, expecially when he started live sampling and distorting pop cans into rhythm tracks. Innovative stuff with a clear jazz influence. Directed by Dominic Leung. Watch the music video (qt).

HELICOPTER GIRL: Angel City

Jackie Joyce AKA Helicopter Girl is a Mercury Prize nominated artist with two albums under her belt. The first, entitled How To Steal The World, is a moody and sparingly produced gem of cool blusey, trip-hop beats combines with Helicopter Girl's seductive purr and esoteric, sometimes menacing lyrics. The second album, Voodoo Chic, from which this video is lifted, is a fully produced, some might even say over-produced, pop record that captures some of the initial mystery of her first record, but loosed much of her edge. And while this video has much cross over potential, it would need the marketing budget of a Dido release to catapult it to the mainstream consciousness. Cliptip's advice- land it in a car commercial. The video is directed by the collective known as Burning Vision (founded by James Heath and Gratian Dimech) and is a clear homage to Blue Note records. Watch the music video (qt).

DANIEL AGUST: If You Leave Me Now

Orchestra electronica infused pop from the Icelandic singer/actor/performance artist/really bad dancer (see music video), most popularly know as the former lead singer of Gusgus (the band whose new work I'm salivating for at the moment). This album, which I imported from One Little Indian UK a while back is genuinely beautiful, full of strings, lush landscapes and lyrical poetry very much missing from today's instant gratification pop formula. Will he achieve mainstream success with this album? Probably not. It's bears a sophistication and eccentricity for which North America seems to lack a patience. But while mass appeal eluding, the material is excellent. So perhaps those to which have a pallet for such music will help find themselves picking up a copy and help keep those questing for originality and artistry find an audience through fan support. THE RAPTURE: Get Myself Into It

Brand spanking new The Rapture from the much much much anticipated follow-up to Echoes. The new album is called Pieces Of The People We Love and it's due September 12 in the USA. This single gets official September the 4th and I would expect a series of killer ripper remixes to compliment it's dancefloor domination. Highly infection sax and drum with the familiar howl of Luke Jenner, the video goes on to fully revive the roller skating phenomenon, flared white pant suits and all. It's really quite a simple concept, but absolute joy to watch with a fun little roller battle between The Rapture bassist Matt Safer and roller dude. SUPERSYSTEM: White Light / White Light

Damn this is good music. It's blippy and punky and angular and stylist and pointy and builds like a wave and knocks you over. According to their bio, the foursome are both New York and Washington DC based and have successfully frapped their diverse inluences ("Hip-hop, electronica, punk rock, so-called world music, a little bit of everything") into a dynamic and suprising cohesive mix. WE ARE WOLVES: Little Birds

As predicted, "wolf" bands come in packs of two. Today, it's not only the second wolf, but the second Montreal wolf band. We Are Wolves also mix a bit of experimental edge into their songcraft, including eletro synths and drum machines and a whole lotta hand claps. I believe this video is directed by fellow Montrealer Yan Giroux and it essentially links in with their album cover artwork. Watch the music video (qt).

AIDS WOLF: Spit Tastes Like Metal

Montreal art rockers AIDS Wolf are not for mass consumption. A more noisey punk aesthetic than even New York's Black Dice, these guys make your head hurt with shrill guitar grinds and nonsensical blibber blabber. Self described, they call their sound "a squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag." But in case you didn't know, a couple of the members are part of graphic design group Seripop. They make ace band posters. This video, one of the lesser than melodic numbers on their debut, is directed by E*Rock. Watch the music video (qt).

GUSGUS: Believe

I am dying for the new Gusgus album. I've refreshed their webpage so many times, my mouse button hates me. Why is it taking so godddamn long? Don't Gusgus realize they have a public to attend to? Well, to tie me over here's a brilliant self directed clip for their debut album, Polydistortion. A pale green complexion washes over the mood of the video, showcasing a drowned Hafdis Huld and a hairless Daniel Agust. Watch the music video (qt).

ANJALI: Seven X Eight

Bollywood trip-hopping chanteuse Anjali collaborates with Mumbleboy (aka Kinya Hanada) for this bubbly, hyper-coloured flash animation video for her retro-surf-fusion single. "Like South Park meets Yellow Submarine." No Quicktime, folks, but worth the looksie none the less. So the big question is, where the hell is she now? The track is from her third long-player, called The World of Lady A, and there has been little publicized activity since, save some rather unconfirmed Eastern European gigs. HOW TO PODCAST CLIPTIP

The cliptip podcast has been rocking the few savvy subscribers who knew how to hook it up in iTunes. Those peeps were able to download the majority of cliptip's featured music videos straight to the their own hard drive to watch, rewatch and general enjoy when a internet connect to the cliptip website was not available. Those even savvier know how to import those videos directly to their iPods for portable cliptip podrocking. But today's tutorial will walk those new to the whole podcasting phenomenon on how to set themselves up in 3 easy steps.

STEP 1: Make sure you have iTunes. Download the latest version here. Install it and then launch iTunes!

STEP 2: Go back to your web-browser on the cliptip page. See that image to the on this post? See the corresponding image on top right hand side of the blog? More your cursor over to it and right click on it (PC) or ctrl + click on it (Mac) and select "copy link" from the drop down menu.

STEP 3: Back to iTunes! Click on the "'Advanced" menu and select "Subscribe to Podcast. When it the window opens up, select 'paste' into the URL box and click OK. Your done!

Now, you can adjust your podcast settings so that everything a podcast friendly cliptip music video is posted, you should be able to automatically save it to your computer. So easy! Enjoy!

THE KNIFE: Marble House

True to form, Swedish duo The Knife unleash another single of twisted electro beauty with perfect complimentary vocals by fellow eccentric Swede Jay-Jay Johanson and a stunning, eclectic visual smorgasborg from director Bjorn Renner. This video combines such diverse images as blue ball-point pen illustrations, body builders, Spanish flamenco and various acts of gypsie mysticisms. I love The Knife and their crazy art electronica. It's like playing with Tarot cards or something, always some hidden meaning to discover. Watch the music video (qt).

SHINY TOY GUNS: Le Disko

Los Angeles electro rockers Shiny Toy Guns are really working the MySpace angle. The quartet have pieced together a great little clip for this great little tune and it really does deserve your attention. Dark, brooding and crunchy electro with enough rock sparks to keep the indie punks happy and the white-belted dance floors packed. Watch the music video (qt).

COBRA STARSHIP: Snakes On A Plane (Bring It)

The most hyped movie of the summer, and perhaps the most retarded movie of the century, Snakes On A Plane breaches onto the silver screens today. An what better way to celebrate the pop culture phenomenon by posting the mutherfucking video from the mutherfucking movie? That Samuel Jackson line is going to grate, even as I wantonly abuse it myself. The garden salad band consists of Gabe Saporta, lead singer of the band Midtown, Maja Ivarssen from Swedish new wavers The Sounds, William Beckett from the Academy Is... and Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes. COLDER: Crazy Love

French musician and designer Marc Nguyen Tan is a muthafucking genius on a muthafucking plane. His music is artful, sophisticated and icy cool. His killer ear and killer eye blend to concoct the sublime concept called Colder. So much do I love his work, that this early video from his first album is getting a cliptip flashback. This music video from 2003, composed of vector animations, radiates cool while pumping you with Run Lola Run adrenaline. Watch the music video (qt).

JUNIP: Black Refuge

Smoke, skulls and black and white disembodied heads and coffee cups. Furious acoustic guitars against urgent organs. Not exactly the sound nor image you'd expect from a band that features silky smooth troubadour Jose Gonzalez. But such it is for the Swedish three piece. The video is directed by long time The Knife collaborator, Andreas Nilsson, so the spookiness of the imagery seems in character. Watch the music video (qt).

JET: Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

Australia has been so freaking hott I just can't stand it! The new Van She ep is just released here in North America, Wolfmother is touring, blah blah blah, Modular Records is da shit. And this Melbourne four piece band, that one that can claim to be one of the select bands to have been featured in one of the ever exclusive iPod advertising campaigns? YEAH YEAH YEAHS: Cheated Hearts

Contest videos are fun, but only in small limited edition doses. The Yeah Yeah Yeah's embarked on a web-courted video submission project where fans all over the world send in their best imitation of the band. The cream of the crop gets spliced into the final cut. And here it is. See if you town is representing. Watch the music video (qt).

THE STREETS: Never Went To Church

There's something awkwardly confessional about this single. It's all laid bare. And it kinda just hangs in the air. Begging someone to say something. Someone. Anyone. Say something. Say anything. Before the lager louts in the chav outfits spilling their pints down their shirts start hugging each other while singing tunelessly along with the chorus. Please. OK GO: Here It Goes Again

A marvelous follow up to the single-shot choreographic masterpiece of their A Million Ways To Be Cruel music video. Can it dogme, call it formula, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just as treadmills. Whether viewed as a serious or a stand alone, it's delirious good fun. The track is from the Chicago fourpiece's second album, Oh No, released late 2005. PLAN B: Mama

The UK hip hop moniker for Ben Drew, not to be confused with the emergency contraceptive, releases a second video which essentially riles against a stepfather, which is reportedly semi-fictional. What the hell does that mean? Perhaps the white boy rhyme anger is what's courting those British Eminem comparisons. Or perhaps its all about the skillz. The chorus borrows from Hall and Oats and does a nice job in beefing it up. The video is directed by cliptip favourite, Dawn Shadforth. Watch the video (qt).

CSS: Let's Make Love To Death From Above

Sub Pop signing CSS (short for Cansei De Ser Sexy, Portugese for Tired of Being Sexy) funk it up with their brand of Brazilian electro-pop while paying tribute to now defunct Toronto rockers Death From Above 1979. In this video, the Sao Paulo six piece take to the streets and cause the whole damn city to bounce like some pimped out convertable. You may still be able to catch them on tour with Diplo... THE MOST SERENE REPUBLIC: Content Was Always My Favourite Colour

I first witnessed the grandness of The Most Serene Republic a couple of years ago as they played a gig with Broken Social Scene. I was quite blown away by the live show of this Milton based six piece. If you don't know where Milton is, don't worry. You'll probably never go there. So obviously I picked up their record. Then I was shock at how it paled in comparison. So I put it on the back burner and sort of avoided playing it. But now I've unearthed it and have actually become quite smitten with them again. So dig dig dig and here's a video! The little clap clap clap bridge is my geeky favourite part. Directed by the Experimental Parachute Moment. Watch the video (qt).

JUNIOR SENIOR: Can I Get Get Get

Horray! Junior Senior has released a new video that is a composite of a bunch of videos submitted from friends and such, in an attempt to "get to know each other better." It's really fun and DIY, with a bunch of interesting people, including JD Samson from Le Tigre, a woman who appears to be Peaches, and a duo of Japanese girls who may or may not be Cibo Matto. These things I cannot confirm, but if you recognized 'em or spot anyone in particular, feel free to post a comment. It's like Where's Waldo. It's too bad the Junior Senior sophmore album is only available by import in North America. They are super fun. Watch the video (qt).

GOLDFRAPP: Strict Machine

Arjan reports that Goldfrapp will be releasing a US only collection of remixes, entitled We Are Glitter. The compilation will include all the choice slices from the electropop gem, Supernature, remixed by the creme de la creme of remixologists. That list will include Icelandic dreamblippers Múm, New York dance punk tastemasters DFA, Italy's favourite Ibiza stormer Benny Benassi, and Berlin based electro deejay / author / producer Ewan Pearson, among others. And as a spicy addition, this epic and now iconic pop classic, Strict Machine, will appear with a new "We Are Glitter" remix. It's about time this video got cliptipped. Directed by Jonas Odell. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE: Sexyback

What the fuck is going on? Is cliptip traffic down? Has someone hacked into the cliptip server and punk'd the site? Is Earnest being forced to blog at gunpoint? Well no. I just happen to like this track. And you know you do as well. Give me a break if all you dirty Cobrasnake baiting hipsters from Williamsburg to Shoreditch to Parkdale to The Mission don't be downing the last of the Pabst Blue-Ribbon and heading to the dancefloor whenever Steve Aoki drops the needle this record. And when he mashes it with the MSTRKRFT remix of Annie? Man, the kids just loose it. Production creds go to Mr. Timbaland, who has apparently recorded 7 tracks with Bjork's tangental return to the marginally mainstream. It's also nice to see former Mouseketeer Justin aping rock-and-roll badboy with desperate PR releases on how bad-ass he really is. The video is directed by Michael Haussman. Shut up you love this. DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979: Romantic Rights

Cliptip is sad to report that Toronto post punk duo Death From Above 1979 have called it quits. From their website: "I know its been forever since I wrote anything on here. I'm sure by now most of you assume the band isnt happening anymore since there are no shows, no work on a new album, etc. Well. I wanted to let you know that your assumptions are correct. We decided to stop doing the band... actually we decided that almost a year ago. We finished off our scheduled tour dates because there were good people working for us who relied on us to make a living and buy christmas presents and pay rent etc. We couldnt just cancel everything and leave them out to dry... plus i think we wanted to see if we would reconsider after being out on the road. Our label was really hoping that we would change our minds, so they asked us to keep quiet about the decision for at first. Well, its been quite awhile now and we are still very sure the band wont happen again, so I guess its time to say something." Here at cliptip, I've been a religious archivist of all the videos Jesse and Sebastien released together. This innovative Litebrite video directed by Chris Gismer was the third video ever posted on cliptip. I am sad to see them go, but what a great record they leave behind. Watch the video (qt).

THOM YORKE: Harrowdown Hill

First video from Thom's solo debut, The Eraser. It's a dark moody number with an equally ominous video of blurry footage, speed motion landscapes and Thom in favoured aquatic submersion scenarios. Not surprising, it feels more electronica than rock in the vein of the Kid A and Insomiac years. I love it. And I can't wait for the new Radiohead stuff that is rumoured to be much more rock-oriented in the vein of The Bends. Directed by Chel White. THE DEARS: Ticket To Immortality

V FESTIVAL TORONTO Montreal rockers The Dears rev up to play the Toronto Island Virgin festival come September. This is the latest video from the six piece who, along with Toronto indie folksters The Hidden Cameras, have just be gobbled up by the ever expanding roster of the Arts & Crafts label. It's like the blob. The video is pleasant enough, although really lacks a strong identifiable concept or mood, besides its backdrop pantone selection. College radio will love it. Personally, I find it a little too safe rock to warrant unbridled cliptip advocacy. But I will not deny it is very very catchy stuff. Watch the video (qt).

HANNE HUKKELBERG: A Cheater’s Armoury

Julija tips me to this fantastic animated video from Norwegian left-of-center pop singer Hanne Hukkelberg. Not the dance pop indie darling that fellow Norwegian Annie turned out to be, Hanne seems more inclined to be categorized in the vicinity of Imogen Heap, or earlier Emiliana Torrini, and she counts members of Jaga Jazzist and Xploding Plastix amongst her players. Norway is pretty hot these days, huh? The video is by animator and illustrator Andreas Paleologos. Watch the video (qt).

THE RACONTEURS: Hands

New video from that other Jack White band. How shitty would that be to be a overshadowed by Jack White's ginormous presense? Ask drum kit operator Meg White from Jack White's original band. Thank goodness she's getting modelling work from Marc Jacob. But no matter how talented you are, how excellent your contribution, the very fact that Jack White is in the same band as you, you become as irrelevant as tits on a nun. Lead vocals on this track are by Brendan Benson, not that it really matters. This video is directed by Ramon Bloomberg who turns "Hands" into "sign language". Harff harff naff. Watch the video (qt).
